The Best Wineries Near Luray, Virginia
The Shenandoah Valley might be best known for its mountains, but it's also home to some great Virginia wineries. From small farm vineyards to beautiful tasting rooms overlooking the mountains, there are plenty of options within an easy drive of Luray.
Not all winery experiences are the same, though. Some are worth settling into for an entire afternoon, while others are better for a casual glass of wine or a quick stop. These are some of our favorites, depending on what you're looking for.
Muse Vineyards — Best Overall
If you only have time for one winery, Muse Vineyards is our top pick.
Set along the Shenandoah River near Woodstock, Muse feels like a proper wine-country outing. The vineyard and surrounding mountains make for a beautiful setting, and there's enough here to settle in rather than just stopping for a quick tasting.
Muse is also a good choice if wine quality matters to you. The vineyard has received recognition at the Virginia Governor's Cup, and its wines are made largely from grapes grown on the estate.
Another reason we like Muse: there's real food. The kitchen serves everything from cheese and charcuterie to flatbreads, salads, and larger dishes, making it easy to turn a tasting into lunch or an afternoon out.
It's also open during the week, which makes it one of our favorite recommendations if you're visiting Luray outside of the weekend.
Best for: The complete winery experience, good wine + food, and a leisurely afternoon.
Cave Ridge Vineyard — Best for a Relaxing Winery Afternoon
For a classic Shenandoah Valley vineyard experience, head to Cave Ridge Vineyard.
Tucked into the countryside near Mount Jackson, Cave Ridge has a laid-back atmosphere with plenty of outdoor space and mountain views. It's the kind of winery where it's easy to order a bottle, find a spot outside, and realize you've stayed much longer than you planned.
They offer food and charcuterie, and there's often live music or another event happening, particularly around the weekend.
Cave Ridge is also open during the week, so it's a good choice when you're looking for a winery afternoon without needing to plan your visit around Saturday or Sunday.
Best for: A relaxed afternoon, outdoor seating, and classic Shenandoah Valley scenery.
Wolf Gap Vineyard — Best for Mountain Views + Live Music
If your ideal winery afternoon involves a glass of wine, mountain views, and some live music, Wolf Gap Vineyard is a great choice.
The vineyard sits on a ridge overlooking the Shenandoah Valley, with plenty of outdoor seating and a large covered pavilion. They regularly host live music, which gives the winery a livelier atmosphere than some of the smaller tasting rooms in the area.
There's also food available, so you can easily stay for a while rather than planning another stop for lunch.
Wolf Gap is open throughout the week, making it another good option for guests visiting outside of the weekend.
Best for: Mountain views, outdoor seating, live music, and a more social winery afternoon.
Glen Manor Vineyards — Best for Wine Lovers
If you're willing to drive a little farther for the wine itself, Glen Manor Vineyards is worth the trip.
Located near Front Royal at the northern end of Shenandoah National Park, Glen Manor is an estate vineyard surrounded by mountains. The focus here is much more on the wine than entertainment, with grapes grown on steep vineyard slopes bordering the national park.
You'll find varieties such as Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Petit Manseng, along with estate red blends.
The atmosphere is quiet and intimate rather than lively. Glen Manor doesn't serve meals and intentionally keeps the experience small, so we'd choose this one when you really want to taste Virginia wine—not necessarily when you're looking for live music and an all-afternoon party.
Bring your own picnic if current policies allow, and check hours before making the drive.
Best for: Serious wine drinkers, couples, and a quieter tasting experience.
Castle Vineyards — Best Close-to-Luray Weekend Stop
If you want to stay closer to Luray, Castle Vineyards is worth checking out.
The tasting room sits on a working cattle farm surrounded by rolling fields and mountain views, so the setting is a big part of the experience.
Castle is a little different from the other wineries on this list. The wines are produced by Barren Ridge Vineyards rather than made entirely on-site, but you can taste them here without making the longer drive south.
It's primarily a weekend destination, so check current opening days before planning your visit.
Best for: A convenient weekend wine stop, pastoral views, and staying closer to Luray.
Wisteria Farm & Vineyard — Best for a Casual Local Stop
Wisteria Farm & Vineyard is another close-to-Luray option, located just outside Stanley.
This is a small family-run farm winery with a much more rustic, low-key atmosphere than Muse or Cave Ridge. There's a barn tasting area, outdoor seating, and a bistro serving sandwiches and charcuterie.
We think Wisteria is especially fun when there's live music or an event happening. On a quiet weekday, expect a much more casual farm-winery experience rather than a polished destination vineyard.
That's not necessarily a bad thing—just know what kind of afternoon you're looking for before you go.
Best for: A casual glass of wine, a low-key local experience, or visiting when there's live music.
If You Only Have Time for One
Go to Muse Vineyards.
It offers the best combination of wine, scenery, food, and atmosphere, and it's a place where you can easily spend a few hours without needing to plan much else.
For a more relaxed countryside experience, we'd choose Cave Ridge Vineyard.
And if you're particularly interested in the wine itself, make the longer drive to Glen Manor Vineyards.
Planning a Wine Day from Luray
Don't try to squeeze too many wineries into one afternoon. Two is plenty, especially when part of the fun is finding a good spot outside and staying awhile.
Always check current hours before you leave, particularly during the winter and if you're visiting on a weekday. Live music, food service, and events can also vary throughout the year.
If there's a particular winery you're excited about, check its event calendar before your trip. A quiet vineyard and that same vineyard on a Saturday afternoon with live music can feel like two completely different experiences.
And, of course, plan ahead for a designated driver if you're visiting more than one.
