Worth the Short Drive: Charming Towns Nearby

While we love spending time in Luray, some of our favorite places in the Shenandoah Valley are just a short drive away. If you're staying for a few days and looking to explore beyond town, these are the destinations we find ourselves recommending most often.

Sperryville

Drive Time: About 30 minutes

If we had to pick one nearby town to spend an afternoon exploring, Sperryville would be near the top of the list.

Nestled at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this tiny town has become a favorite destination for food lovers, coffee enthusiasts, and anyone who appreciates a slower pace. It's the kind of place where you can spend a few hours wandering without much of a plan and still have a great day.

What We Like To Do

  • Grab coffee at Before & After

  • Grab a blueberry muffin at The Corner Store

  • Enjoy lunch or dinner at Rappahannock Pizza Kitchen

  • Visit Copper Fox Distillery

  • Browse the small collection of local shops and galleries

  • Take the scenic drive through the surrounding countryside

Why we love it: Sperryville feels creative, relaxed, and distinctly Shenandoah. It's one of those places that somehow feels both discovered and undiscovered at the same time.

Washington

Drive Time: About 30 minutes

Washington may be best known as the home of The Inn at Little Washington, but the town itself is worth visiting even if you don't have a reservation.

The village is small, picturesque, and surrounded by rolling countryside. It's an easy destination for a leisurely afternoon or a memorable evening out.

What We Like To Do

  • Enjoy lunch, pastries, or cocktails at Patty O's

  • Celebrate a special occasion at The Inn at Little Washington

  • Visit a local winery

  • Walk through the historic village

  • Enjoy a scenic drive through Rappahannock County

Why we love it: Everything feels intentionally unhurried. It's the kind of place that encourages you to slow down and enjoy where you are.

Front Royal

Drive Time: About 40 minutes

Often called the northern gateway to Shenandoah National Park, Front Royal offers a different feel than Luray.

It's larger, busier, and home to a growing collection of restaurants, breweries, and shops. If you've already explored downtown Luray and are looking for something different, Front Royal makes an easy day trip.

What We Like To Do

  • Explore Main Street

  • Visit a local brewery

  • Browse antique and vintage shops

  • Visit Skyline Caverns

  • Grab lunch downtown

Why we love it: It's a great option when you're looking for a little more variety while still staying close to the mountains.

New Market

Drive Time: About 35 minutes

New Market is one of Virginia's oldest towns and offers a fascinating mix of history and Shenandoah Valley scenery.

It's a quieter destination that often flies under the radar compared to Luray and Front Royal.

What We Like To Do

  • Visit New Market Battlefield State Historical Park

  • Explore downtown

  • Browse antique stores

  • Enjoy a scenic drive through the valley

Why we love it: It feels like stepping into a different era of the Shenandoah Valley.
