Our Favorite Things To Do in Luray, Virginia

When people ask us what there is to do in Luray, the answer is usually, "How much time do you have?"

One of the things we love most about this corner of Virginia is that you can spend the morning hiking in Shenandoah National Park, stop for lunch in town, explore a cavern in the afternoon, and still make it back in time to watch the sunset over the mountains.

Whether you're visiting Luray for a weekend getaway or a longer stay in the Shenandoah Valley, these are the places and experiences we find ourselves recommending most often.

Explore Shenandoah National Park

If it's your first visit to Luray, this is where we'd start.

Just minutes away, Shenandoah National Park is home to some of the best hiking in Virginia, scenic overlooks, waterfalls, wildlife, and Skyline Drive. Whether you're looking for a short walk to a mountain viewpoint or a full-day adventure, there's a trail for every pace.

Why we love it: Every season feels different. We've visited countless times and still find ourselves pulling over for "just one more overlook."

Visit Luray Caverns

Even if caves aren't normally your thing, Luray Caverns is worth experiencing at least once.

The underground chambers are surprisingly massive, and the rock formations feel almost unreal. It's one of the most popular attractions in Luray for good reason.

Why we love it: It's one of those places that's hard to appreciate until you're standing inside it.

Spend an Afternoon in Downtown Luray

Downtown Luray won't take all day to explore, and that's part of its charm.

Grab a coffee, browse a few local shops, and take your time wandering through town. Some of our favorite afternoons have been the ones without much of a plan.

Why we love it: It feels refreshingly unhurried.

Take a Drive Along Skyline Drive

Not every adventure needs to be a hike.

Skyline Drive winds through Shenandoah National Park and offers some of the most beautiful mountain views in Virginia. There are dozens of overlooks where you can stop, stretch your legs, and take in the scenery.

Why we love it: Some of the best views in the Shenandoah Valley are only a few steps from the parking lot.

Get Out on the Shenandoah River

During the warmer months, few things are more relaxing than spending a few hours on the Shenandoah River.

Whether you choose a kayak, canoe, or tube, it's a completely different way to experience the valley.

Why we love it: The pace is slower, the scenery is beautiful, and it's a great excuse to unplug for a few hours.
